Cyber Security Awareness Program: Safe use of cards
Giving your card to another person, even if only for a moment, increases the risk of your card data being stolen.
People who handle your card can copy the information from the card with magnetic stripe or chip readers, as well as by taking pictures of the information on the front and back of the card.
If they have enough time, fraudsters can simply write down the data without using technology. After stealing your information, fraudsters can use it to make online payments or create a copy of your card for physical payments.
How can this happen?
For example, you are a guest in a restaurant and you give the waiter your card to pay the bill. The waiter takes the card behind the bar to swipe it at the cash register and in the process copies the secret information from the card.
In which places and situations should you increase caution?
Caution should also be increased when using the card at points of sale. In order to make a payment at points of sale, you will never need the CVV/CVC number on the back of the card, and it is extremely important to keep these numbers secret. It is also necessary to pay attention to the devices on which payment is made and potential hidden cameras with which attackers can try to access card data.
Be careful how you handle the card in the following places:
- points of sale
- restaurants and cafes
- online transactions

What can you do to increase security?
- Ask the sales staff to bring the POS device closer to you so you don't have to drop the card.
- Ask for the payment to be made in front of you.

What should you always be doing?
